The 50th Anniversary edition of the Miss Universe Pageant

The 50th Anniversary edition of the Miss Universe Pageant was held on Friday May 11th, at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Seventy-seven delegates took part in the preliminary competitions and rehearsals.

67 of them were eliminated earlier in the week after a swimsuit and evening attire parade on Sunday and interviews during the week.

The lucky 10 remaining contestants were announced as the evening got started. They were:

Miss Spain Eva Siso Casals, 21;
Miss Venezuela Eva Ekval, 18;
Miss Nigeria Agbani Darego, 18;
Miss Israel Ilanit Levy, 19;
Miss Greece Evelina Papantoniou, 23;
Miss India Celia Jaitely, 21;
Miss Russia Oxana Kalandyrets, 20;
Miss USA Kandace Krueger, 24;
Miss France Elodie Gossiun, 19;
Miss Puerto Rico Denise M. Qui?ones August, 20.

The new Miss Universe 2001 is Denise M. Qui?ones from Puerto Rico. This 20 year old beauty not only won the title, but won the Miss Photogenic award, Clairol Herbal Essence Syle award, and during the competition itself won the swimsuit award. Denise stands 5'10".
