This year's VDMA TFL industry meeting took place on 14 and 15 November in Berlin. For many years, the trade association has been committed to Europeanisation and this year, too, further European members have joined the ranks. "Only together as a European industry can we form an antithesis to the current global framework conditions and remain competitive," said Elgar Straub, Managing Director of the TFL trade association. The consequences of the trade dispute between the USA and China and the unclear Brexit situation are causing great uncertainty and unrest in the markets. The industry is also feeling this, and strong European cohesion is the necessary response to the current political and economic situation.
The recent MUNICH FABRIC START, held from 3 to 5 September 2019 in Munich, Germany, launched the new Hall 8 and an extended exhibitor portfolio to once again convince the sector of the innovation and information platform. Featuring highly concentrated themes, new exhibition formats and numerous expert-led panel discussions, keynotes and lectures. Now spread over eight halls, for the very first time over 1,000 international suppliers showcased more than 2,000 collections in the Fabrics, Additionals, Denim and Sourcing segments for Autumn/Winter 2020/2021.

The manufacturers of sewing and garment technology as well as machines for processing technical textiles look back on a turbulent year in 2018: While the sector reported a substantial increase of 120 percent in cumulative terms between 2009 and 2017, exports in 2018 fell by 16.7 percent from 603 million Euros in 2017 to 502 million Euros in 2018. "The industry is experiencing strong uncertainty among its customers, which has a negative impact on investment behaviour," said Elgar Straub, Managing Director of VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies (TFL), at the opening press conference of the Texprocess in Frankfurt. "The overbureaucratisation in Germany, such as the Posting of Workers Directive or the DSGVO, the threat of Brexit and the national tendencies in many European countries, but also the situation in Turkey, the trade dispute between the USA and China and the ever more severe trade sanctions set up by the USA - all this is bringing considerable unrest to the markets.
The world's largest trade fair for creative handicraft & hobby supplies, h+h cologne that came to a close in Cologne on Sunday this year had around 16,500 trade visitors from 80 countries (2018: 73 countries). In this way it marked a further chapter in the success story of the international trade fair for creative handicraft and hobby supplies.

Similarly, exports by the sector, which brings together manufacturers of sewing and garment technology, shoe and leather technology as well as laundry and dry-cleaning technology, increased by 6.2 percent in 2017 from 1.049 billion euros (2016) to 1.114 billion euros (2017). "Although times are still economically successful, many external components, such as Brexit or the trade policy of the US President, are nevertheless bringing considerable unrest to the markets," said G?nter Veit, Chairman of the VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies.

The 26th edition of Milano Unica, Italian Textiles and Accessories Trade Show, which was held at Fiera Milano Rho from 6 to 8 February, not only registered a significant uptick in exhibitors (+14%), but also a corresponding rise in the companies visiting the fair, a total of 5,949.
